{"id":1369,"date":"2017-08-31T10:57:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-31T09:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/casacolliregas.cat\/la-casa\/"},"modified":"2025-02-27T17:56:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T16:56:52","slug":"la-casa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/casacolliregas.cat\/en\/la-casa\/","title":{"rendered":"The house"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On May 12th, 1897 Pere Comas, a mason from Matar\u00f3 by profession, requested permission from the City Council of Matar\u00f3 to renovate the houses at numbers 55 and 57 on Argentona Street, which he had bought a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>As shown in the project plans included in the building permit application, the intervention consisted of demolishing the two houses and constructing a new building.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, these plans are signed by the architect Antoni Galliss\u00e0 (Barcelona, 1861-1903), although the author is also the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.<br \/>\nOne reason for this could be that Puig i Cadafalch was the municipal architect of Matar\u00f3 until a year earlier, between 1892 and 1896.<\/p>\n<p>The book <em>L&#8217;oeuvre de Puig y Cadafalch<\/em> (1904), dedicated to the architect&#8217;s work, confirms that he is the author of Casa Coll i Reg\u00e0s.<\/p>\n<p>This new building has 4 floors: basement, ground floor, first floor, and attic. font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|font_size:24|text_align:left|color:%23333333&#8243; google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Overlock%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]He was born in Matar\u00f3 in 1855.<br \/>\nHis father and paternal grandfather were tailors, and his maternal grandfather, Feliciano Reg\u00e0s, had a factory where Joaquim Coll i Reg\u00e0s began to work.<\/p>\n<p>This factory was the continuation of the one founded by the engineer Antoni Reg\u00e0s i Borrell (Matar\u00f3, 1752-1837), inventor of a spinning machine, at the beginning of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>It was located at 9 d&#8217;en Moles Street and later moved to Cuba Square, corner with Uni\u00f3 Street.<\/p>\n<p>Later, it moved to new buildings on Merc\u00e8 Street, currently called Cam\u00ed Ral, at the site of Recoder Avenue.<br \/>\nThe company also had buildings on Churruca Street.<br \/>\nThe commercial name of the Coll i Reg\u00e0s factory was &#8216;Sobrino de Antonio Reg\u00e0s&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>In 1880, Joaquim Coll i Reg\u00e0s married Magdalena Suri\u00e0 i Prats in the church of Sant Josep.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1882 and 1889, their 6 children were born, and they bought two houses on Argentona Street to build the family house, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and completed in 1898.<\/p>\n<p>However, the family was not very happy in the house.<br \/>\nMagdalena Suri\u00e0 i Prats died, and Joaquim Coll i Reg\u00e0s remarried Dolors Jaumandreu i Frigola.<\/p>\n<p>In 1903, a mental illness incapacitated him, and he died in Barcelona in 1904.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;40px&#8221;][vc_separator color=&#8221;custom&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|font_size:24|text_align:left|color:%23333333&#8243; google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Overlock%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]He began working as an architect in Barcelona and Matar\u00f3, where he was the municipal architect between 1892 and 1896.<\/p>\n<p>In the city, he was responsible for urbanizing many streets and for modifying, modernizing, and expanding the sewer network, many of which are still in perfect condition.<br \/>\nTogether with Dr. Llu\u00eds Viladevall, he wrote the work &#8220;Memoria sobre el estado sanitario de la ciudad de Matar\u00f3&#8221; (&#8220;Report on the sanitary condition of the city of Matar\u00f3&#8221;), where he demonstrated that the lack of sewers or their poor condition caused many health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Among Puig i Cadafalch&#8217;s works in the city, the renovation of the Session Hall of the City Hall and its coffered ceiling, a wooden decorated ceiling structure, stand out.<br \/>\nOther works include the Rengle Market building in the Gran Plaza, designed by the previous municipal architect, Emili Cabanyes, for which he designed a new roof.<\/p>\n<p>He is also the author of the Benefic\u00e8ncia building on Sant Josep Street and several private works such as the Sisternes House (1891) on Sant Sim\u00f3 Street, corner with Espenyes, the Can Palomer or La Confianza store (1894) in the Xica Plaza, and the Parera House (1894) on Nou Street.<br \/>\nOnce he ceased to be the municipal architect, he designed the Coll i Reg\u00e0s House (1898).<\/p>\n<p>In Argentona, he designed his own house (1897-1905), Can Gar\u00ed del Cros (1897), and the Sacrament Chapel of the parish church of Sant Juli\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>During the time he worked in Matar\u00f3, he participated in all the city&#8217;s cultural and artistic initiatives:<br \/>\nthe founding of the public municipal library and the Artistic Archaeological Association, for which he designed the banner that the association offered to the Ripoll monastery during its restoration.<br \/>\nFinally, he installed the first Matar\u00f3 Museum on the ground floor of the now-disappeared School of Arts and Crafts building.<\/p>\n<p>In Barcelona, his first work was the Maci\u00e0 Jewelry store (1892) on Ferran Street, which no longer exists.<\/p>\n<p>He also built many emblematic houses in the Eixample district:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Amatller House (1900) on Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia.<\/li>\n<li>The Macaya House (1904) on Passeig de Sant Joan, now the cultural center of La Caixa.<\/li>\n<li>The Trinxet House (1904) on C\u00f2rsega Street, which no longer exists.<\/li>\n<li>The Casa de les Punxes (1905) on Diagonal Avenue.<\/li>\n<li>The Serra House (1907) on Rambla de Catalunya, now the headquarters of the Barcelona Provincial Council.<\/li>\n<li>The Quatre Gats House (1897) on Montsi\u00f3 Street.<\/li>\n<li>The Casarramona factory (1913) in Montju\u00efc, now the cultural center of La Caixa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Montserrat, he is the author of the Cross of the Fifth Sorrowful Mystery of the Monumental Rosary, with the collaboration of the sculptor Josep Llimona.<\/p>\n<p>Josep Puig i Cadafalch died in Barcelona at the age of 89, on December 22, 1956.
